Mobile Phone Overview: The Samsung S5350 Shark

Samsung is pushing full steam ahead with their new Shark series of mobile phones. While the Genio series (also known as the Corby series outside of the UK) was focused more on touch screen devices, the Sharks are tuned to the more basic needs of mobile phone users. Not exactly the kind of high end devices tech geeks would drool over, but these are perfect for filling in that quick need for a phone.

This series of entry level devices come with that good old Samsung form and style that is both visually appealing and functional. Right now, there are three devices in the Shark lineup, and here we will be featuring the Samsung S5350 Shark. This may look like an average mobile phone, but this 3G capable device is sports some pretty impressive features under its casing.

About the Shark

Currently, the Shark series is still listed as upcoming in several of Samsung’s official websites and the devices are not expected to arrive until later this year. The Shark S5350 is considered to have an “unconventional and innovative curvilinear design” –though it does look like an average candy bar phone at first glance, the impeccable attention to design aspects is seen in subtle curves of the buttons and the soft bevel line around the screen.

One interesting new feature of the device is the Communities 1.0 application which appears to be a social networking application. The phone will also have additional functions such as instant messaging and a yet to be described “remember memories” function.

Display and Camera

The display screen on this phone may seem small when compared to the average smart phone, but 2.2 inches of screen is more than enough for handling basic phone functions, reading messages and even for displaying map data. It has a modest resolution of 240 x 320 pixels which allows it to handle HTML sites nicely. With a color display capacity of 256 thousand colors, images appear sharp and detailed onscreen.

Speaking of images, the 3.2 mega pixel camera on the phone is perfect for shooting images for sharing and uploading. The maximum resolution you can get on the camera is 2048 x 1536 pixels. It has auto focus for taking shots in busy locations but the lack of flash means you need to compensate for lighting.

Other Specifications

The Samsung S5350 Shark functions as a music and video player, able to handle files in varying formats such as MP3, WAV, eAAC+, and WMA (for music) as well as MP4, H.263, H.264, and WMV (for video). Media playback for a whole day is possibly with the phone’s power supply. The device comes with a regular 900 mAh lithium ion battery, so if you are a heavy user, it would be a smart idea to bring a travel charger or a spare, fully charged battery.

Talk time is a decent 3 hours and ten minutes on 3G while it lasts for a whole ten hours and thirty minutes on 2G. On standby, the phone delivers up to 450 hours.
