During its latest press conference, popular electronics company Lenovo announced a mobile phone initially intended to meet the needs of the fast growing Chinese market – the Lenovo LePhone. Just like the other news making announcement of this company, which is the Skylight netbook, this phone runs on the Snapdragon processor by Qualcomm.
The company’s CEO, Yang Yuanqing, presented the mobile phone by promising that it is currently the best handset in its category. It is definitely attractive, with its 800 x 400 pixel resolution and its customized, Linux-based operating system.
The company foresees that in China alone, there will be about 90 million smart phone users by 2014. Since they are highly popular in their home country, coming out with a smart phone is a very bright, practical idea since they can probably get a significant share of this market.
“Try and do that with your IPhone ”
The Lenovo LePhone is set to go head to head with iPhone – at least in China. When it comes to the features, it has rear and front cameras, a removable battery and a 3.5 mm head phone jack located at the bottom of the handset. Rory Read, head of Lenovo in the US, joked, “Try and do that with your iPhone,” while talking about the virtues of this mobile phone.
When trying out the phone, you’ll instantly notice that it is very responsive, and is a lot like the iPhone is this respect. It also has WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and has inherent support for WCDMA or Wideband Code Division Multiple Access 3G. There is a proprietary 9 pin socket for peripherals and for charging as well.
The main menu of this mobile phone is very reminiscent of the iPhone’s menu one. The stacked buttons on the touch screen are very user friendly. At the bottom of the touch screen display is another touch panel instead of the usual physical controls. This touch panel responds well to gestures, which was custom coded by the manufacturer in the Android version used by this smart phone.
Unique Surprises Along the Way
The first surprise with this mobile phone is the innovative attachable keypad with a circular controller right at the centre. All the other keys are arranged around this.
As mentioned, it comes with a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. It has a surprisingly huge AMOLED touch screen display that measures 3.7 inches and has WVGA resolution. There are several dedicated touch gesture buttons at the bottom of the screen. In fact, there are several features that are quite similar to what you’ll find in the Google Nexus One.
Waiting for this Phone
The only problem with the Lenovo LePhone is that it is available only in China at the moment. The manufacturer is planning to test the market response first before releasing this phone worldwide. There’s no word yet as to whether this smart phone will be GSM based or CDMA based, and it’s unclear why this important fact has not yet been officially announced by Lenovo.
