Bharatbook.com : Israel Telecommunications Infrastructure

Israel has a very competitive telecommunications market with one of the highest mobile penetration rates in the world and also one of the highest household broadband penetration rates. This report introduces the key aspects of the market with statistics and analysis; it overviews the key regulatory issues affecting Israel’s telecom industry in some detail. The nature of competition in the market is changing and the advent of VoIP, triple play strategies and the new digital media puts particular focus on the details of regulation. The recommendations of the Gronau Commission are likely to cause further regulatory changes in the near future.

Israel has very competitive fixed-line voice, broadband and digital media market sectors. Bezeq has retained the vast majority of the domestic fixed-line voice services, but new licences being granted for VoIP service provision are beginning to shake up the market. Partner, Netvision, Xfone and Bezeq International had all acquired VoIP licences and had begun providing competitive domestic telephone services by early 2009. The International fixed-line voice market is already very competitive and recent mergers have created strong players. Market competition is fierce, both between cable and DSL infrastructures and between ISPs. Competition is also fierce between Bezeq’s satellite TV subsidiary YES and cable TV operator HOT. Israel’s very high broadband penetration rate provides great potential for triple play and digital media developments and competitors are manoeuvring for positions.

Israel’s mobile communications market is one of the most competitive in the region, with four operators in a saturated market. The difficulties of growth through new customer acquisitions and voice tariff competition have led the operators to focus on mobile data, regularly launching new value-added products and extending their offerings to provide bundled services including fixed-line. Third generation services have been launched by the three major operators and subscriber numbers are significant. Success in selling mobile content and applications is essential to combat falling ARPU.

Key highlights:· Infrastructure investment by the mobile operators in 3G and HSPA is having an impact. Cellcom has flagged its intention to build its own infrastructure to be operational by the time its contract with Bezeq runs out in 2010.

· Pelephone launched its 3.5G HSPA network in February 2009, after investing NIS1 billion and by April there were over 200,000 subscribers on the new network.
· Bezeq’s share of the domestic fixed-line voice market has now fallen to below the magic 85% figure. Bezeq is awaiting the promised licence amendments and has applied to the Ministry of Communications for a VoIP permit. Bezeq reportedly aims to migrate all its fixed-line subscribers to VoIP by 2014.
· Bezeq has begun the rollout of its NGN with a pilot in Ness Ziona, Kiron and Rishon LeZion and plans to complete the nationwide rollout by 2013. In June 2009, the operator had migrated 100,000 of its existing subscribers to the new network which provides speeds of up to 15Mb/s.
· In February 2009, a proposed merger between Bezeq and YES was approved by the Restricted Trade Practices Tribunal, with conditions which will cause a further shift in the telecommunications landscape if the merger goes ahead. The conditions include a requirement for Bezeq to unbundle its NGN to make it available to other operators and a requirement to keep YES on the air.
· In addition to a competitive FTA TV market, the majority of the Israeli population subscribe to cable or satellite TV, mostly digital. Both HOT and DBS satellite TV operator YES offer PVRs and HOT also offers VoD services.

Is Today's Technology Tomorrow's Future?

May 20, 2009 was a first. Astronauts aboard the space station drank water recycled from urine, sweat and water condensation from exhaled air. The urine recycling system is especially needed for outposts on the Moon and Mars, but it will also save NASA money by not having to ship as much water to the space station. The system’s ability to make about 6 gallons of water in about 6 hours will become even more important when the space station expands from 3 to 6 people. Today if you’re an astronaut, “urine” a unique group.

Farmers whose microchipped plants send text messages to the farmers’ cell phones asking for water are in a unique group. The thin sensor, which is smaller than a postage stamp, attaches to plant leaves like a clip-on earring. Using these sensors in the western U.S. to conserve water and the electricity needed to pump water across fields could save farmers hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly. The original “plant cell phone” was developed by NASA to reduce time and supplies needed to grow crops in space. Today’s version still needs a power source, but future sensors could have solar panels as technology grows too.

As technology grows, a New York company may have made the most significant change in publishing since Guttenberg started printing more than 500 years ago. “On Demand Books” has installed a trial machine in a London bookstore. Containing 500,000 digitally saved titles and another 500,000 expected in 3 months, the printer runs at about 100 pages a minute, pages are stuck and bound together and a book is turned out. Although the machine costs $175,000, books average $15 and will enable bookstores to compete with Internet stores and electronic books. Although it’s called the “Espresso”, this machine grinds out books.

To divert fishing and diving from natural reefs, the General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, a retired Navy warship, ground to a halt when it was sunk in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The $8.6 million project is the world’s second-largest, artificial reef. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates the ship’s lifespan to be at least 100 years at 40-140 feet below water, providing a stable habitat for many fish species and exciting fishing and diving opportunities for residents and visitors. Because the Vandenberg reef is expected to increase spending in Monroe County by $7.5 million annually, their ship’s come in.

Web 2.0 and SaaS for Human Resource Managers

Recently we were asked by “People and Management” a popular HR magazine in India to explain Web 2.0 and SaaS to their readers who are mainly senior HR Folks, CEOs and other management profiles. Our thoughts were published in the magazine as an article titled “Web 2.0 and The SaaS Factor for HR“. Here is the summary of this article. (Full version PDF available at request.)

Web 2.0 EffectIf you visit Internet often, you will have, most certainly, come across the two buzz-words, Web 2.0 and SaaS. Let us discuss what these two actually are, how these are redefining the workplace and why as HR experts, should we be interested in these technology issues. It has to be borne in mind, however, that Web 2.0 and SaaS concepts apply to several domains. Here follows its application in HR Management.

The Web 2.0

This Web 2.0 is a specific type of design of a web site that allows “communication, and information sharing” amongst the owner of the website and visitors. Unlike previous forms of websites which only allowed one-Way Communication (apart from filling a contact us form), Web 2.0 websites allow visitors to communicate with the owners about the content and also enables them to communicate with each other.

The Free Factor

The most significant thing about Web 2.0 is that it is free. Unlike yesteryears, when you needed to pay to create a web site, Web 2.0 works on the concept of free utilization of this powerful resource. Now anyone who has access to Internet can create a blog or website or open an account for free.

Where does Web 2.0 comes into the HR domain? A few reasons,as to whyHR should use Web 2.0, are listed here:

  1. To know what the latest is happening in HR: There are about a Hundred Good HR sites where you can know more about HR policies and processes. You can discuss and share your HR knowledge. The recommended ones are http://www.citehr.com and http://www.hrguru.com
  2. To know more about your employees: Most Generation Y employees create their profiles on social networking sites. By adding them to your network, you can know more about them, their activities and their latent talents which are not visible otherwise.

Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS is a software model where the purchaser does not purchase or own the software; they just use it as and when required.

SaaS replaces the traditional ERP approach where organizations used to purchase software, hardware and then hire the consultants to customise it according to their needs. Many organisations purchased software but never used them due to lack of knowledge & consequent hesitation .

Nintendo DS R4 Card - Quick Hints And Tips

For new readers, here's a quick run down of just what the R4 DS is. You may also wish to read my other article about the R4 DS Slot 1 Device. In my previous article I went into the details of exactly what the R4 DS is, what it can do, and how it works. I won't re-write all of those deatils and features here once again for the sake of saving readers who've read my previous article.

You'll have to choose from a variety of card sizes depending on what kind of storage capacity you'll be needing. There are smaller ones for those who are only interested in storing a few games, or there are larger ones for people who want to store all or most of their games. If you aren't quite sure how many games you'll want to store, then you should get a 16Gbit card. This way you'll have plenty of room for your current games, as well as space to store games later on.

The R4 DS Slot 1 Solution Package

It's almost a dead giveaway here, except for the fact that the R4 DS comes in it's own R4 DS Box. But you'll notice that once you open the box, the contents of the box are identical to the M3 DS Simply, you even get the same light blue colored keychain / carry case that comes with the M3 DS simply. You get everything you need, right out of the box.

Play MP3s and Movies

By using the excellent program Moonshell (Which comes bundled with the R4 and M3 DS Simply) you can turn your DS into a portable media player, able to play MP3s and DPG movie files.

The NDS Fire Card also provides extra features, such as the ability to download skins. This lets you personalize your DS screen and further customize it with Photoshop. Other storage devices, such as the R4 DS, do not have these perks, leaving you with a plain, boring interface. If these added bonuses are important to you, then you'll want to get the NDS Fire Card.

For a real time-saver, the Nintendo DS Fire Card offers the easiest game selection available. The touch menu allows you to browse through your games quickly to get to the one you feel like playing. Other devices, like the DSTT, have major disadvantages with this, including an inability to alphabetize your list of games and a lack of a simple folder browser.

The R4DS is not illegal (you can buy them from Amazon), but Nintendo wish it was. Video game pirates use the R4DS to play games they do not own legally. Owners of the R4DS are urged not to take advantage of this and Nintendo are fighting to stop the sale of the product. The long-term effects of piracy are a weaker gaming industry and therefore fewer games and games of a lower quality.

Why should you use a Sat Nav Even if you know the Way?

Satellite Navigation units have become very popular recently, and are now a common site in many cars, with many car manufacturers offering Sat Navs already installed in mid to high range models of their vehicles. If you do not own a Sat Nav, one reason for this may be because you consider it to be an added expense, especially if you already know your journey well, or are quite comfortable using maps and road signs for new destinations. However there are features on many modern Sat Nav units that enable the devices to receive traffic information. This feature can be used for highlighting roads that are congested. The Sat Nav device can then recalculate your journey and offer you another alternative route that will avoid any problem areas. Traffic Message Channel (TMC) is a very useful traffic and travel gadget for drivers. It is typically digitally coded using the Radio Data System (RDS) on conventional FM radio broadcasts. It allows silent delivery of high quality accurate, timely and relevant information, in the language chosen by the user and without interrupting normal services. When the data is integrated directly into the navigation system, this then gives the driver the option to take alternative routes to avoid traffic incidents. Another method of receiving traffic updates is by connecting a GPRS enabled mobile to your Sat Nav unit. The mobile phone can then receive traffic updates via GPRS, which are relayed to your GPS via Bluetooth. The main disadvantage of this is that GPRS data is usually charged as an extra cost from your mobile phone provider. When calculating a route the Sat Nav will use the average speeds of the roads to work out the quickest route to your destination. If there is a conjestion then the device will recalculate your journey. The unit will take into account the average speeds on the roads and calculate a new route. While the new route may be longer in distance, the GPS unit will know that it will take less time as the vehicle will be travelling faster.

If you’re after a sat nav then it’s important that you look around for the best sat nav deals . A good way of doing this is to shop online as you can then compare models and prices easily.
